Deutsche Version

Weitere bemerkenswerte Auftritte sind seine Rollen in Batman: The Dark Knight, Paul Thoman Andersons Inherent Vice, The Specialist, Der Pate von Greenwhich Village, Best of the Best und The Expendables.

King of the Gypsies" machte dich zum ersten Mal groß in der Filmlandschaft.

Hast Du vorher Kampfsport studiert?

ICH BEKOMME TONNENWEISE FEEDBACK FÜR BOTB, POPE, RUNAWAY, STALKED BY MY DOCTOR UND DR WHO

GANZ ANDERS.

Was ist deine Lieblingsszene in diesem Film?

Hast Du Erinnerungen an diesen Film?

YAY.

Philipp Rhee

BRILLANT IN DEM, WAS ER TUT. EIN GUTER MENSCH.

Interview

Can you tell us a bit about how you grew up?

I GREW UP IN THE SOUTHERN UNITED STATES. MY PARENTS DIVORCED AND REMARRIED OTHER PEOPLE. MY SISTERS ARE 9, 11 AND 20 YEARS YOUNGER THAN I.

Which actors and movies inspired you as a child?

I LOVED RICHARD BURTON AND SANDY DENNIS AND WESTERN MOVIES.

How you entered the movie or theater business?

I ACTED IN LITTLE PLAYS AS A CHILD, AND ALWAYS DREAMED OF BECOMING AN ACTOR. I STUDIED IN A SUMMER PROGRAM AT RADA IN LONDON, ENGLAND. I MOVED TO NEW YORK AFTER HIGH SCHOOL AND AUDITIONED FOR AND DID PLAYS. I ALSO ACTING IN A SOAP OPERA.

What was your first job on a movie set?

FIRST JOB ON A MOVIE SET WAS “KING OF THE GYPSIES”.

King of the Gypsies first put you big on the movie landscape, what do you remember about the movie and getting famous and suddenly have a buzz around you? Was that hard to deal with?

IT WAS FUN TO DEAL WITH. I WAS IN SHOCK. I MAYBE AM STILL IN SHOCK!

With Star 80 you got a second nomination for a golden globe (first for King of the Gypsies). Then with Runaway Express an Oscar nomination, how would you describe the 80s for you?

THE 80S WERE AN ADVENTURE. I HAD A DRUG PROBLEM, PROBABLY TRYING TO MANAGE VARIOUS FEARS AND RICOCHETING EMOTIONS. THE RECOGNITION WAS MAGICAL AND EXCITING. BUT I WAS UNSTABLE AND NOT PLEASANT TO BE AROUND. I LOVED MY WORK BUT HAD A FUNNY WAY OF SHOWING MY LOVE TOWARDS PEOPLE. I COULD BE SAD OR RUDE. I WISH I HAD MORE CHARM AND POSITIVITY IN THOSE DAYS.

You had such an impressive, long and diverse career that I want to pick some personal and dear highlights for me, if this is ok for you? Can you tell us something about the Pope of Greenwich Village? I really like the movie and your chemistry with Mickey Rourke. What do you think of the movie after such a long time?

I THINK POPE IS A GREAT FILM. I UNDERSTAND ITS POPULARITY. IT IS A COMEDY, BUT NOT LIKE A TELEVISION HALF HOUR COMEDY. I LOVED MAKING POPE. MICKEY IS A KIND PERSON AND AN INCREDIBLE ACTOR.

Are you still friends with Mickey Rourke and how would you describe him?

STILL FRIENDS. HE IS A VERY CARING PERSON. HE IS A LITTLE LOST, AS MANY OF US ARE.

Runaway Express is also a great movie, sometimes I have the feeling it suffers of being a Cannon movie (I love Cannon though) and it would be held in higher regard if it would have been from another Production company, what do you think?

I AGREE WITH YOU. CANON HAD A REPUTATION FOR MAKING “B MOVIES”. RUNAWAY SHOULD HAVE EARNED THEM THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE. ALL STUDIOS AND INDIES MAKE GREAT AND POOR FILMS. THAT’S JUST NATURAL.

Was there ever talks of you being in another Cannon movie and had you any interaction with Golan & Globus?

I’VE ALWAYS BEEN OPEN TO THEM.

What do you remember about this movie? Do you still like it and what can you tell us about the performance of Jon Voight?

I THOUGHT JON WAS ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. I AGREE WITH THE PEOPLE WHO THINK IT’S A GREAT FILM. I AM VERY HONORED THAT PEOPLE LIKE ROBERT PATTINSON AND QUENTIN TARANTINO LOVE “RUNAWAY TRAIN”. HOW LUCKY I AM.

Do you have a favorite scene of this movie?

I LOVED THE SCENE WITH DANNY TREJO. I LOVED THE SCENE ABOUT THE SHOES.

I am a Action Fan to the bone so I need to ask you some questions to some of my highlights and I would like to start with Best of the Best. How you got attached to this movie?

I BELIEVE PETER STRAUSS, THE PRODUCER, CALLED MY AGENTS AND ASKED FOR ME. BUT I’M NOT SURE. I’D LOVE TO KNOW HOW IT ALL CAME ABOUT.

Have you studied martial arts before?

I HAD STUDIED A LITTLE. BUT MY STUDY OF MARTIAL ARTS WITH SIMON RHEE WAS REALLY SPECIAL.

What does the Martial Arts mean to you?

THERE ARE GOOD ASPECTS OF THE PHILOSOPHIES ASSOCIATED WITH MARTIAL ARTS.

BUT I DO NOT BELIEVE IN VIOLENCE OR FIGHTING.

Still the first one is the best for me, still a great martial art fighting movie with some great tournament action but also drama, is this a movie you still get lots of feedback for?

I GET TONS OF FEEDBACK FOR BOTB, POPE, RUNAWAY, STALKED BY MY DOCTOR AND DR WHO

The second is stylistic much different then the first one, what is the reason for that? Which one is your favorite movie?

QUITE DIFFERENT. A DIFFERENT COLLABORATION BETWEEN DIRECTOR AND PRODUCER. I PREFER THE FIRST, BUT LOVED MY EXPERIENCE ON THE SECOND BECAUSE MY WIFE WORKED ON IT, AS DID MY BONUS KIDS. ELIZA (ROBERTS) CAST IT AND KEATON SIMONS AND MORGAN SIMONS WERE IN IT AND ON LOCATION WITH US.

There are two more sequels in which you are not a part of, what was the reason for this?

I FELT THE STORY HAD BEEN TOLD. I WAS CONCERNED THE QUALITY WOULD NOT BE MET. I REGRET NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE NEXT SEQUELS. MAYBE IT’S NOT TOO LATE (FOR ANOTHER ONE).

In The Specialist you play the antagonist (together with James Woods) to Sylvester Stallone and the son of Rod Steiger and you have some scenes together with Sharon Stone, what do you remember about this one?

GREAT FUN. ELIZA WAS ON LOCATION WITH ME. WE BEGGED THE KIDS TO JOIN US. THAT WHOLE CAST AND JERRY WEINTRAUB LOVED EACH OTHER.

Sylvester also directed you in The Expendables, how would you describe him and his personality?

SLY IS EXTREMELY SMART AND REALLY LOVES HIS FAMILY, BOTH HIS ORGANIC FAMILY AND HIS MOVIE FAMILIES.

Coming to The Expendables, was that a fun shoot with this Allstar Cast? You had obviously scenes with Sly, Austin, Lundgren, Daniels. What is your favorite Scene of that movie?

MY FAVORITES WERE SCENES WITH AUSTIN. THE WHOLE MOVIE WAS LIKE CAMP. WE HAD TO FOCUS AND REALLY MAKE THE STORY SITUATIONS AND PHYSICALITY WORK.

I really like you as the bad guy in that movie. I am a big Van Damme Fan, but still, I prefer the duo of you and Austin in the first movie as bad guys. You really chew up every scene you are in, what was your inspiration for this performance?

THANK YOU. I AM JUST FINISHING A FILM WITH THE GREAT VAN DAMME.

IN THE EXPENDABLES I WANTED TO STAY SUBTLE ABOUT THE DANGER MY CHARACTER EMBODIED.

Another Blockbuster you worked on was The Dark Knight. I love this movie, saw It multiple times in the cinema. Christopher Nolan is one of the most interesting and surprising directors out there, how would you describe him as a director?

CHRIS IS VERY SERIOUS AND VERY IMAGINATIVE. HE AND HIS WIFE, EMMA, MAKE A GREAT TEAM. MUCH LIKE MY WIFE AND ME…SHARON AND OZZIE…ALI AND HIS WIFE.

This will surprise some people, but I am a Fan of Director Jesse V. Johnson and he directed you in The Butcher. A small but very effective action movie. Do you have some memories about this one?

YAY. I LOVE THAT YOU BROUGHT UP ONE OF MY FAVORITE DIRECTORS, JESSE JOHNSON.

You had many more big and great roles; can you note some of your personal role and movie highlights and what make them so special for you?

I LOVED DOING “IT’S MY PARTY”. I THINK THAT FILM, A TRUE STORY, IS BEAUTIFUL AND IMPORTANT. I LOVE MY WIFE’S LOVE OF “FINAL ANALYSIS”. I LOVED DOING “THE RIGHTEOUS GEMSTONES”.

Have you never been interested in directing?

I WANT TO CO DIRECT WITH ELIZA.

Is acting like a drug for you? You never seem tired of acting and making movies!

I GET TIRED OF IT, BUT I BELIEVE IN STAYING A WORKING ACTOR.

What does acting mean to you, parts of your family work in the business and your daughter works as an actress. Is it work, passion, both, something in between?

BOTH.

After which criteria are you choosing your roles currently? You worked on blockbusters, b movies, art movies, action movies, tv shows, you basically worked in every environment possible, what do you need to give your best possible performance?

I LIKE TO MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY. IF THEY WANT ME IN THEIR MOVIE, I TRY TO SHOW UP.

You have more than 600 credits, which goals are there left for you?

TO FIND THE GEM IN EVERY PROJECT.

How would you describe your career in one sentence?

MY CAREER HAS MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES. IT IS VERY ACTIVE. LIKE ME!

Is it ok if I give you some name and you shoot some quick answers to some people?!

Philipp Rhee

BRILLIANT AT WHAT HE DOES. A GOOD PERSON.

Ralf Möller

AMAZING

Gary Oldman

A DEAR PERSON AND A FAN OF MY BONUS SON, KEATON SIMONS’ MUSIC, SO I LOVE GARY.

Rod Steiger

A FRIEND OF MY MOTHER IN LAW, LILA GARRETT. I RESPECTED ROD SO MUCH, ESPECIALLY HIS SOBRIETY.

Steve Austin
